About the event
Self-supply for water and sanitation involves individuals and communities independently developing and maintaining water and sanitation systems. It is common everywhere in the world.
While self-supply contributes to increasing service levels and demonstrates agency, autonomy and resilience, it is often a response to serious gaps in service provision. It does not absolve states of their responsibility to progressively realise the human rights to water and sanitation.
Financial, technical, legal, and institutional support for self-supply is needed to make self-supply viable. This includes enabling regulatory frameworks that promote integrity, as well as measures to increase transparency and address risks of unequal and unsustainable access.
In this Integrity Talk, we will explore integrity dynamics in different self-supply contexts. We will examine Finland’s structured self-supply model, the use of smart technologies in Zambia and Tanzania, and a case study from Asia.
